Uganda

The Pearl of Africa and East Africa’s Green Heart

Uganda is a landlocked country in East Africa, often referred to as the “Pearl of Africa” due to its lush landscapes, diverse wildlife, and natural beauty. It is bordered by Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, South Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The country hosts Lake Victoria, Africa’s largest lake, and is one of the sources of the Nile River. Kampala, the capital, is the country’s commercial and cultural center.

Formation and Historical Background

  • Pre-colonial Uganda consisted of powerful kingdoms like Buganda, Bunyoro, Toro, and Ankole.

  • Gained independence on October 9, 1962, with Milton Obote as the first Prime Minister.

  • Experienced periods of political instability under Idi Amin (1971–1979).
