Selangor State

Malaysia’s Economic Powerhouse — Smart Cities, Industry, and Heritage

Selangor Darul Ehsan, situated on the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia, is the most developed and urbanized state in the country. It surrounds the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya, and is home to smart cities like Shah Alam, Petaling Jaya, and Subang Jaya. Selangor leads the nation in GDP, infrastructure, logistics, education, and technology.

Formation & Historical Background

  • The name “Selangor” is believed to originate from “Sungai Selangor” or the Malayan silverleaf monkey (lotong selangor).
  • Historically part of the Malacca Sultanate, then under Johor-Riau rule, Selangor gained prominence in the 18th century under the Bugis warrior princes.
  • It became a British protectorate in 1874, joining the Federated Malay States later.
  • Selangor became a constituent state of independent Malaya (1957) and later Malaysia (1963).
  • Kuala Lumpur was once its capital but became a Federal Territory in 1974; now the capital of Selangor is Shah Alam.
